SBS Radio Melbourne — Studio 2
Broadcast Radio Studio Lighting Upgrade
The Brief
SBS needed to upgrade the lighting in Studio 2 at their Radio Melbourne facility in Federation Square. The studio already had cameras fitted for video crossover content, but lacked a lighting system capable of delivering consistent, broadcast-quality illumination across the curved presenter desk. The existing low bulkhead ceiling added a technical constraint — any lighting solution needed to maintain sufficient output despite the limited mounting height and throw distance to presenters.
The Build
Dragon Image designed a ceiling track lighting system using six LightPro Track Light 40B variable colour LED fixtures mounted on 1.5m powered track sections, positioned to run the curve of the studio ceiling above the presenter desk. Two LightPro spigot-mounted panel lights were wall-ceiling mounted on the opposite side of the room to provide fill lighting for a second presenter position. All cabling was routed above the ceiling for a clean finish, with power supplied via dedicated AC adaptors for the track system. The installation required coordination with SBS's electrician to provide loose power outlets above the ceiling before the lighting fit-out could begin.
Key Features
6x LightPro Track Light 40B variable colour LED fixtures
Curved 1.5m powered ceiling track system
2x wall/ceiling-mounted spigot panel lights for secondary presenter position
Wireless remote control for the 40B track system
Diffusion paper fitted for soft, even output
All cabling concealed above the ceiling
Coordinated installation with SBS's on-site electrician
The Outcome
SBS Radio Melbourne's Studio 2 now has consistent, broadcast-grade lighting across the full curved presenter desk, supporting both radio production and video crossover content from the same space. The ceiling-mounted system keeps the studio floor and desk completely clear, with no visible cabling or fittings disrupting the room's clean, professional finish.
