How to Choose the Right Studio Lighting Brand for Your Studio

The studio lighting market offers more quality options than it ever has. For most studio builds, the question is not whether the lighting will be good enough — it will be — but which system is the right match for the specific studio, the people who will operate it, and the content it will produce.

Dragon Image stocks and specifies all of the brands below. Here is how we approach the decision.

The brands and what they are for

Brand

Primary strength

Best suited to

LightPro

Purpose-built for permanent Australian studio installation. Ceiling systems, cyclorama integration, single-switch operation. 15+ years of refinement.

Permanent studio builds — broadcast, school, ecommerce, corporate

Godox

Broad ecosystem, flash and LED, wireless X system, strong value. Wide modifier range via Bowens mount.

Studios needing flash and LED, budget-conscious builds, school flash setups

Nanlite

Highest colour accuracy in the range. CRI 96 / TLCI 97+. Forza COB output for broadcast-grade work.

Colour-critical work — fashion, commercial photography, broadcast

Amaran

Creator-focused. Full RGBWW colour, app control, accessible price. Ray COB series for studio and portable use.

School studios, content creation spaces, podcast studios, in-house brand studios

Aputure LS

Professional film and broadcast standard. High output, full ecosystem, authorised dealer support.

Film sets, broadcast facilities, high-output commercial studio builds

Decision framework by studio type

School media studio

LightPro for the ceiling infrastructure — pantograph systems, tracklight runs, single-switch or basic DMX operation. Amaran for portable and colour-capable lights that students can handle confidently. Godox for flash if the curriculum includes photography with strobes. The combination covers every curriculum application without exceeding school budgets.

Broadcast or corporate piece-to-camera studio

LightPro SlimLine tracklights for the primary ceiling system — single-switch operation, consistent output, no setup required. Aputure LS 300x or Nanlite Forza 300B as a supplementary key light if higher output or colour accuracy is required for specific productions. The operational priority — walk in, switch on, shoot — is best served by a fixed ceiling system rather than adjustable stand-mounted lights.

Ecommerce or fashion studio

LightPro overhead softbox system as the primary source for consistent, even overhead illumination across the cyclorama. Nanlite or Aputure LS for supplementary key and fill where higher colour accuracy is required for skin tone or product colour fidelity. Godox flash if the studio also does still photography with strobes alongside video.

In-house content creation or marketing studio

Amaran Ray or COB series for the primary lights — app-controlled, full RGBWW, accessible for non-specialist operators. Aputure Nova P300c or similar soft panel for overhead fill. The Amaran app control means anyone on the marketing team can operate the studio without a lighting technician.

Film or large commercial studio

Aputure LS 600D Pro or 600x Pro for high-output key and fill. Aputure Light Dome modifiers. LightPro ceiling infrastructure for the studio building itself. Nanlite for colour-critical supplementary work. At this level the system is usually a combination of brands rather than a single manufacturer.

The questions that determine the answer

What is the primary output — photography, video, or both? Photography can use flash; video requires continuous LED. Budget — is this a one-off capital investment in a permanent system, or does the budget need to be spread across consumable and replaceable gear? Who operates it — a specialist, a teacher, a marketing manager, students? Operator skill level significantly affects which systems make sense. Does colour accuracy matter critically — for skin tones on broadcast, for garment colour in fashion, for product colour in ecommerce?
